Fort Pickens is a pentagonal historic U.S. military fort on Santa Rosa Island in the Pensacola, Florida, area. The fort was completed in 1834 and was one of the few forts in the South that remained in Union hands throughout the American Civil War.
Favorites: There are miles and miles of white sand, undisturbed beaches. It’s a federal wildlife refuse on an island and it’s only 100 yards or so wide with Pensacola Bay to the north and the Gulf of Mexico to the south.
Fishing: It was extremely windy during our stay. In fact, the sand blowing across the road caused white out conditions. Unfortunately, this also made the fishing very difficult. A friend took us out in the Gulf on his boat and we caught a bunch of 14″ Trigger fish. A trigger fish is measured to the “fork” of the tail and not the end of the tail. The limit to the fork was 15″ minimum so we had to catch and release.
